I am fascinated by the urban and city environment – especially at night and how it influences our imaginations – which then carries into my work in oils, acrylics and light”.

In the same way that people of Turner’s generation regarded views of natural wonders or phenomena as breathtaking and inspiring we can now regard the built environment and cities – especially at night - as sublime modern experiences”.

Nick Hedderly graduated from Birmingham School of Art in 1984 and has lived and worked in Nottingham since.

Nick Hedderly has added to his range of 'sublime' subject matter recently with new work which derives its inspiration from the City of London including views of bridges and the environment along the banks of the Thames - the work includes paintings of buildings that are already starting to become iconic urban imagery. These were seen at the painter's very successful 'London Sublime' solo show in Nov 2004 at Gallery 33 in London. Together with his Midlands based cityscapes, these subjects continue to provide the inspiration for Hedderly's work.

NIGHT THEMES: During the mid nineties Nick started to develop a strand of work based on specific locations in Nottingham at night. These were based largely on the horizontal landscape format. This approach allowed the artist to combine the dark dramatic imagery of the early abstract pieces with a definate sense of place in his own mind. Importantly it also allowed him to retain abstract elements and ways of making abstract marks within his work.

CITYSCAPES: More recently Nick has produced a series of painting based on seminal buildings such as St Paul’s Cathederal and Trellick Tower in London. “ My work explores how people engage with the language of architecture represented by these buildings and represents this in the language and forms of painting. I wonder about the effect these buildings have on others and what feelings they invest in them, and how they become the repository of so many of our feelings and memories
