Paintings are so very often as much about paint itself as they are about subject or source; a reality not universally understood. It can speak as eloquently as word or melody when exploited with intelligence and dexterity. Hambleton has this understanding in her very DNA. John Fineran, 2008 |

| Lindsey Hambleton lives in Derbyshire,
close to where she was born in 1978. A full time career in art followed the
study of illustration, and environmental science at universities in Manchester.
Her work has captured the imagination of art buyers during the last ten years,
with her detailed illustrative style developing into more confident and
expressive use of paint. Lindsey has exhibited in several regional galleries,
and at major art fairs in London, Edinburgh and Bristol where she has achieved
consistently high sales. In 2007, Lindsey's paintings became more heavily textured, and freer in style, with a whole series of work painted on old palette boards, with the main colours of the palette remaining in place. This encouraged a new purity and intensity of colour, and paintings grew organically from an abstract starting point. This experiment encouraged Lindsey's current bolder style. Lindsey begins by applying paint with a cloth, then builds the painting with brushwork and occasionally a palette knife. Areas of the painting are burnished and polished, and glazes layered to give a luminous effect of light and shade. Bold brushwork injects movement into Lindsey's work, enhanced by the impressions of changing light. |

Painting has always been a passion. I can remember clearly as a
child having the urge to paint, and also the frustrations when my creations
didn't match my vision! I am told that from an extremely young age, before I
learned to write, I would draw a large ' Li' on the bottom of my work as a
signature. My subject matter: landscape, usually with a focus on trees, has
changed little since my first childhood experiments with paint .
I enjoy painting the familiar landscape of Derbyshire, often returning to favourite places. Increasingly, I work outside in the landscape, or from my car. I do not aim to recreate the landscape, but want to capture the feeling of the place, and paint a personal response. I also feel comfortable in painting the Scottish landscape, particularly the late summer and autumn colours. I am drawn to particular features of the landscape: clusters of trees on lows (hilltops), tree lined rivers and lanes, and the shadowed dales - intimate features of the landscape. I find the landscape most striking when there is contrast of light and shade. |

| My
main inspiration is modern and contemporary British landscape painting. I love
to study an artist's work, and then enjoy the sudden flash where I see the
landscape almost as if through his eyes. Following the birth of my son, Rowan, in 2006, I have found that I paint in a more focussed manner, making use of every moment of work time for painting. Shorter working days mean that paintings are left to dry, then reworked on several occasions with layers of glaze, and to intensify the colours. This prevents the urge to overwork, and allows me to view the work with a new clarity. Through painting outdoors, I am learning to capture the conditions that drew me to the location, and it is my aim to increase the time I spend working in this way, and to inject this immediacy into my studio paintings. |
