Elizabeth Haines

Living in Pembrokeshire since 1968, Elizabeth Haines has worked extensively as an illustrator, and taught at the Carmarthen College of Art. She has exhibited widely in Wales, England and France, and has worked as Artist in Residence at the National Eisteddfod. Her work in the figurative idiom has been influenced over the years by an interest in the relationship between the different arts, and more recently by an injury which forced her to paint with the left hand, a practice she now continues. She was awarded a PhD in The Philosophy of Arts from The University of Wales, Lampeter in November 2001.

'My studio painting begins with making (seemingly) random marks...... at this stage it is uninhibited by notions of subject matter, and even without specific intentions as to the nature of the design. Starting to paint with the left hand ... freed me from the constraints of traditional perspective and composition; it allowed my work to become more uninhibited, drawing deeply on memory and imagination.'
